Counselor’s Profile |
Ichitaro Miki Licensed Psychologist (Japan, Certified Public Psychologist) Osaka University, B.A. in Humanities (Western History), Faculty of Letters. M.A. in Cultural Studies (Specialization in Cultural Morphology), Graduate School of Letters, Osaka University.
Based on clinical practice and prior research, he works to articulate the structure of psychological problems and the implicit systems of society, while developing and providing better forms of care. He began practicing counseling while still an undergraduate student. After completing graduate school, he worked at NEC Corporation; a major electronics manufacturer. He then joined the Institute of Applied Social Psychology and the Osaka Center for Psychological Education before founding the Brief Therapy Counseling Center (B.C.C.). He specializes in counseling for trauma, attachment disorders, harassment, and stuttering. Drawing on approaches ranging from traditional Rogerian counseling to bodywork and brief therapy, he has accumulated over 20 years of clinical experience. He has published books on developmental trauma, which have been well received and have sold a total of 40,000 copies. "Developmental Trauma" has been highly praised by experts in Japan, with one doctor who read it describing it as "a textbook on understanding trauma." They have also been translated into Chinese traditional characters and Korean. He has been frequently featured in magazines and on television, and has also served as a consultant and medical supervisor for TV drama productions. Not only as a therapist but also as someone with lived experience, he has personally faced a variety of symptoms and difficulties. From junior high through university, he struggled with stuttering—still considered of unknown cause—and overcame it over five years. Later, during university and his early career, he confronted dissociative symptoms and social anxiety stemming from trauma. His professional background at a major manufacturer and a think tank also gave him insight into workplace, interpersonal, and family issues. Drawing on both his own struggles and extensive knowledge, he supports clients with empathy and works together with them toward solutions.
